Building consents data from NZ for June 2023 rose 3.5% m/m, ‘20% compared to last year.’
According to data released on August 1st by the statistical office, the number of new housing construction permits nationwide in the last quarter of June decreased by about 20% compared to the same period last year. During this period, a total of 9,888 permits were issued across the country, whereas there were 12,284 permits issued during the same quarter last year.
The statistics official explained that both single-family homes and multi-unit dwellings saw a decline in building permits in this quarter, resulting in a consecutive decrease in new housing construction permits for the second consecutive quarter.
During the June quarter of this year, 4,281 permits were issued for single-family homes, marking a 21% decrease compared to last year. On the other hand, multi-unit dwellings, including apartments, townhouses, flats, and retirement villages, received 5,607 permits, reflecting an 18% decrease.
Considering the seasonally adjusted figures, new housing construction permits in the June quarter decreased by 2.6% compared to the March quarter of this year. In the March quarter as well, there was an 8.8% decrease compared to the previous quarter. Seasonal adjustment in statistics allows for more accurate comparisons between adjacent periods.
As of the June quarter of this year, the total number of annual new housing construction permits reached 44,529, showing a 12% decline from the previous year. However, the current number of building permits is at a similar level to the same period in 2021, with 44,331 permits, as reported by the official.
Until June, permits for single-family homes amounted to 18,498 annually, representing a 23% decrease compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, permits for multi-unit dwellings decreased by 3.0%, reaching a total of 26,031.
Looking at major urban areas, Auckland saw a 12% decrease, with 19,085 permits issued annually, while Canterbury experienced a 9.2% decrease with 7,838 permits. Waikato also decreased by 16% with 4,265 permits issued, and Wellington recorded 3,356 permits, a decrease of 16% as well.

올해 6월 분기에 단독주택은 4,281채가 허가됐는데 이는 지난해보다 21% 줄어든 것이며, 아파트와 타운하우스, 플랫과 은퇴촌 등이 포함되는 공용주택은 5,607채로 18%가 감소했다.
한편 계절을 감안해 조정된 수치에서는 6월 분기에 신규주택 건축허가가 올해 3월 분기에 비해 2.6% 감소했는데, 3월 분기에도 전 분기보다 8.8% 줄어든 바 있다.
이 수치는 통계에서 계절적인 요인을 감안한 것으로 인접한 기간의 수치를 더 정확하게 비교할 수 있게 해준다.
한편 올해 6월 분기까지의 연간 신규주택 건축허가는 총 44,529채로 집계됐으며 이는 전년보다 12% 감소한 것인데, 현재 건축허가 건수는 지난 2021년 같은 기간의 44,331채와 비슷한 수준이라고 담당자는 전했다.
이번 6월까지 단독주택은 연간 18,498채가 허가돼 지난해 같은 기간보다 23% 줄었으며 공용주택은 26,031채로 3.0% 감소했다.
또한 대도시 지역을 보면 오클랜드는 연간 19,085채로 지난해보다 12% 감소했고 캔터베리는 7,838채로 9.2%가 줄었으며, 4,265채인 와이카토 역시 16%가 줄었고 웰링턴도 16%가 줄면서 3,356채를 기록했다.
