As repeated flooding in the Kumeū region of Auckland continues to devastate the area, local leaders are now demanding the relocation of the town. Kumeū has suffered significant flood damage over the past several years, and urgent measures are being discussed to address the ongoing risks to life and property in the region.
According to a report released last year by Healthy Waters, there are no viable solutions to the flooding problems in the Kumeū-Huapai area, and the proposed alternatives are deemed ineffective in terms of cost-benefit analysis. The only proposed solution involves the construction of a massive $163 million dam, but the report warns that if this dam fails, it could pose severe threats to the lives and property of local residents.
The Kumeū area has been plagued by repeated flooding for decades. Since the major flood of 1926, which submerged the region by up to 1.2 meters, there have been five significant floods. In recent years, heavy rainfall in 2021 and 2023, totaling 800mm, caused widespread damage. In response, the local community is suffering from both psychological trauma caused by the frequent floods and the tangible damages they have caused.
Rodney MP, Chris Seales, has stated that the only viable option to avoid future flooding is relocating the town to an area less prone to flooding. He acknowledged that the relocation process could take decades but emphasized the importance of making the decision now. He also called for an immediate halt to any new building approvals in flood-prone areas and urged the council to begin the relocation process to a safer region.
Seales pointed out that the 2021 and 2023 floods impacted approximately 100 businesses and that water levels near the Kumeū River continue to rise. Considering these ongoing threats, he proposed relocating Kumeū to higher ground near State Highway 16 north of Huapai. The plan includes the construction of a new town center that would house around 6,000 homes and accommodate 20,000 new residents.
With Kumeū’s future hanging in the balance, experts are calling for urgent action to find a sustainable solution to prevent further flood damage and protect the community.

세이어스 로드니 지역의 의원은 현재로서는 홍수가 더 이상 발생하지 않는 지역으로 타운을 이전하는 방안을 검토해야 한다고 말했다. 그는 타운 이전이 수십 년이 걸릴 수 있지만, 지금 당장 결정을 내리는 것이 중요하다고 강조했다. 그는 또한, 홍수를 방지하기 위한 대규모 사업이 실현 가능하지 않다면, 더 이상의 건축 허가를 중단하고 안전한 지역으로 이전을 시작해야 한다고 덧붙였다.
세이어스 의원은 2021년과 2023년 홍수로 약 100개의 사업체가 피해를 입었으며, 쿠메우 강 인근 지역의 수위가 계속해서 상승하고 있다고 밝혔다. 이러한 상황을 고려했을 때, 미래의 쿠메우 지역은 후아파이 북쪽 고지대에 위치한 16번국도 인근으로 이전하는 방안을 제안했다. 이 계획에는 약 6,000채의 주택과 2만 명의 주민을 수용할 수 있는 새로운 도심이 포함될 예정이다.
