Auckland property manager being investigated for allegedly pocketing tenants’ rent
A property manager in Auckland is under investigation for allegedly embezzling rent and deposits from tenants. The individual, who concealed a criminal history when hired, has been accused of unfairly pocketing rental payments from properties under his management.
The man at the center of the investigation is Tony Roberts, who has a criminal record including theft charges in 1998 and 2002, as well as DUI convictions in 2013 and 2021. Despite his criminal history, Roberts failed to disclose this information to his employer, Barfoot & Thompson, and continued to work as a property manager. As a result, he was dismissed from the company and later filed a lawsuit for wrongful termination and unpaid wages.
Following his dismissal, Roberts went on to found his own property management business, “The Rental Group,” but now faces new allegations of embezzling rent and deposits. Last Friday, he announced that he had canceled the registration of “The Rental Group Ltd.”
The case came to light when a female property owner hired Roberts as her property manager in June of last year, citing her recent childbirth. However, she began to suspect something was amiss when she was informed that only half of the rent from her tenants had been paid, with the remainder supplemented by government welfare payments.
Despite the passage of six months, the situation did not improve. The property owner only received a total of $7,472.64 in rent payments and never received a detailed rent breakdown. Upon inspecting the apartment herself, the owner discovered significant damage caused by tenants, including trash, wine stains, cigarette butts, and wall scratches. She also found that Roberts had provided false rental contracts and had failed to conduct background checks on the tenants.
The property owner has since decided to take legal action against Roberts, claiming a discrepancy of about $11,000 in rent payments. It has also been revealed that Roberts was previously accused of embezzling deposits in 2023, making this not the first such case against him.
Roberts has not responded to media inquiries regarding the matter, and the case is set to be heard in small claims court on March 13.

이번 사건의 발단은 한 여성 건물주가 Roberts를 부동산 관리자로 고용한 데서 비롯됐다. 건물주는 지난해 6월 출산을 이유로 Roberts에게 임대 관리 업무를 맡겼다. 하지만 이후 세입자로부터 임대료가 절반만 지불되고, 나머지 금액은 정부 보조금으로 대체된다는 연락을 받은 후 의문을 제기하기 시작했다.
6개월이 지난 후에도 상황은 나아지지 않았고, 건물주는 임대료 내역에 대한 세부 정보를 받지 못한 채 총 7,472.64 달러의 임대료만을 받았다. 이후 건물주는 아파트를 직접 점검한 결과, 세입자들이 남긴 심각한 손해와 함께 허위 임대 계약서가 사용된 사실을 확인했다. 특히, 세입자는 정상적으로 매주 임대료를 지불했으나, 보증금을 전혀 받지 못했다고 전해졌다.
이에 건물주는 Roberts에 대해 법적 조치를 취하기로 결정했으며, 소액 재판을 통해 약 11,000 달러에 달하는 차액을 주장하고 있다. 더욱이, Roberts는 이미 2023년에도 보증금을 착복한 혐의를 받은 바 있어, 이번 사건은 첫 번째가 아닌 것으로 알려졌다.
Roberts는 이번 사건에 대해 언론의 취재 요청에 응답하지 않았으며, 사건은 3월 13일 소액 재판을 앞두고 있다.
