India and New Zealand to Resume FTA Talks After 10 Years… Strengthening Defense, Trade, and Cultural Cooperation
India and New Zealand have agreed to resume negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) after a decade-long hiatus. The two countries plan to deepen their economic ties by enhancing cooperation in trade, defense, renewable energy, and mineral resources, among other areas.
On March 17, during a summit in New Delhi, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss mutual cooperation between the two nations. Both leaders pledged to strengthen collaboration in sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, energy, minerals, and cultural exchanges.
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi addressed the press, announcing that a roadmap for defense industry cooperation would be prepared, with the resumption of FTA talks included in the plans. He also stated that defense cooperation between the two countries would take concrete forms, including joint military exercises. Prime Minister Luxon expressed confidence that the discussions had been highly productive and that bilateral relations would improve significantly.
India and New Zealand initially began FTA negotiations in 2010, but the talks were suspended in 2015 due to disagreements on several issues. The resumption of these negotiations is part of India’s efforts to diversify its trade partners and reduce dependence on traditional markets.
The renewed negotiations will be led by Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, and Todd McClay, New Zealand’s Minister for Trade and Export Growth. The discussions are expected to prioritize sectors such as agricultural products, educational services, and technology. New Zealand aims to expand its exports of dairy products, wool, and fruits to India, while India is expected to push for greater access for its workforce in New Zealand’s professional market.
The trade volume between the two nations was valued at $1.54 billion (approximately 2.2 trillion won) in the 2024 fiscal year, a figure considered low in relation to their growing economic ties. Experts believe that the resumption of the FTA negotiations could bring significant changes to the economies of both countries.

지난 17일 인도 뉴델리에서 열린 정상회담에서 크리스토퍼 럭슨 뉴질랜드 총리는 나렌드라 모디 인도 총리와 만나 양국 간 상호 협력 방안을 논의했다. 두 정상은 식품, 제약, 에너지, 광물, 문화 교류 등 여러 분야에서의 협력을 더욱 강화할 것이라고 밝혔다.
모디 총리는 회담 후 열린 기자회견에서 “방위 산업에서의 협력 로드맵을 준비하고, FTA 협상 재개도 포함될 것”이라고 발표했다. 또한 “양국 간 방위 협력은 합동 군사 훈련 등 구체적인 형태로 이루어질 것”이라고 덧붙였다. 럭슨 총리는 이번 회담이 매우 생산적이었다며, 양국의 관계가 한층 개선될 것이라고 확신했다.
뉴질랜드와 인도는 2010년에 FTA 협상을 시작했지만, 2015년 여러 사안에 대한 이견으로 협상이 중단되었다. 이번 협상 재개는 인도가 무역 파트너를 다변화하고, 전통적 시장에 대한 의존도를 줄이려는 노력의 일환으로 이뤄졌다.
이번 협상은 피유시 고얄(Piyush Goyal) 인도 상공부 장관과 토드 매클레이 뉴질랜드 통상 장관이 주도하며, 양국은 농산물, 교육 서비스, 기술 분야에서 우선 협상에 나설 것으로 보인다. 뉴질랜드는 낙농제품, 양털, 과일 등의 인도 시장 진출을 목표로 하며, 인도는 뉴질랜드의 전문직 시장에 자국 인력이 진출할 수 있도록 추진할 것으로 예상된다.
양국 간 무역 규모는 2024년 회계연도 기준으로 15억 4천만 달러(약 2조 2천억 원)에 불과하며, 이는 양국 간 경제적 협력에 비해 낮은 수치로 평가된다. 전문가들은 이번 FTA 협상이 양국 경제에 중요한 변화를 가져올 것으로 보고 있다.
