뉴질랜드, 16년 만에 월드컵 본선행… 북중미 진출 확정
New Zealand Secures FIFA World Cup Spot for the First Time in 16 Years
New Zealand has secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 16 years.
On March 24, the New Zealand national football team triumphed 3-0 over New Caledonia in the final of the 2026 North American World Cup Oceania Qualifiers, held at Eden Park in Auckland.
With this victory, New Zealand will return to the World Cup for the first time since the 2010 South Africa tournament, marking its third overall appearance in the World Cup, following its first in Spain in 1982. Excluding co-hosts United States, Mexico, and Canada, New Zealand becomes the second country after Japan to confirm its qualification for the North American World Cup.
Previously, Oceania had only been allotted 0.5 World Cup spots up until the 2022 Qatar World Cup, meaning that even if the region’s top team finished first in qualifying, they had to go through an intercontinental playoff to secure a place in the World Cup. However, for the upcoming North American World Cup, the number of participating teams has expanded from 32 to 48, with Oceania now receiving 1.5 spots. The first-place team will directly qualify, while the second-place team will enter the intercontinental playoff for another chance to qualify.
A total of 11 countries competed in the Oceania qualifiers. New Zealand entered the second round, which involved eight teams in two groups, and won all three of its matches (19 goals scored, 1 conceded) to advance to the third round. In the semifinals, they crushed Fiji 7-0 and then defeated New Caledonia in the final to secure their place in the North American tournament.
Under the guidance of English head coach Darren Bazeley, New Zealand played a goalless first half but broke the deadlock in the 61st minute when Michael Boxall scored from a corner kick by Francis De Vries. Additional goals from Costa Barbarouses and Elija Just sealed the victory and ensured New Zealand’s qualification for the World Cup.
With this achievement, New Zealand has not only qualified for the World Cup but also etched its name in the history of the upcoming North American tournament.

뉴질랜드가 16년 만에 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 월드컵 본선 무대에 진출했다.
24일, 뉴질랜드 오클랜드의 이튼 파크에서 열린 2026 북중미 월드컵 오세아니아 지역 예선 결승에서 뉴질랜드 축구대표팀은 뉴칼레도니아를 3-0으로 완파하며 월드컵 본선 진출을 확정 지었다.
이번 승리로 뉴질랜드는 2010년 남아프리카공화국 월드컵 이후 16년 만에 본선 무대를 밟게 됐다. 또한 1982년 스페인 월드컵을 포함해 통산 세 번째 월드컵 본선 진출을 기록했다. 뉴질랜드는 공동 개최국인 미국, 멕시코, 캐나다를 제외하고 일본에 이어 북중미 월드컵 본선에 진출한 두 번째 나라로 이름을 올리게 됐다.
그동안 오세아니아 대륙은 2022 카타르 월드컵까지 월드컵 본선 출전권이 0.5장에 불과해, 지역 예선에서 1위를 하더라도 대륙 간 플레이오프를 거쳐야만 본선에 진출할 수 있었다. 그러나 이번 북중미 월드컵에서는 본선 출전국이 32개에서 48개로 확대되면서, 오세아니아 대륙에는 1.5장의 본선 티켓이 할당됐다. 1위 팀은 본선에 직행하고, 2위 팀은 대륙 간 플레이오프에 진출해 추가 기회를 노릴 수 있게 됐다.
뉴질랜드는 이번 예선에서 총 11개 국가와 경쟁을 펼쳤다. 2차 예선부터 참가한 뉴질랜드는 3전 전승(19득점 1실점)을 기록하며 3차 예선으로 진출, 준결승에서 피지를 7-0으로 대파한 뒤 결승에서 뉴칼레도니아를 물리쳤다.
경기에서는 대런 베이즐리 감독이 이끄는 뉴질랜드가 전반을 득점 없이 마쳤으나, 후반 16분 프란시스 드 브리스의 코너킥을 마이클 박스올이 헤딩으로 결승골을 터뜨렸다. 이후 코스타 바바루세스와 일라이자 저스트가 각각 추가 골을 넣으며 경기를 완벽히 마무리 지었다.
뉴질랜드는 이로써 월드컵 본선에 직행하게 되며, 북중미 월드컵에서 새로운 역사를 쓰게 되었다.
